VOLUME 1
Most quizzes have optional ear training questions that can be graded separately from the main quiz. If you choose to include the ear training, just decide what percent of the overall quiz grade the additional ear training questions should be (weight as a group). For the LMS versions, it is recommended that you administer the ear training questions as a separate mini-quiz to make the weighting easier.
Separate answer keys are not needed for the LMS versions, since they are prepared for automatic grading systems and the answers are already part of the digital package.
All LMS quizzes have some questions needing audio. The Ear Training examples can be played on the built-in Canvas or Moodle Mp3 players. However, due to copyright protections, the song examples must be streamed using standard Spotify players embedded into the questions.
These players are restricted by Spotify, and by default will only play 30 second previews of each song, taken randomly from the middle of the song track. To hear the full tracks from the beginning, students must log in with a Spotify account, then come back and refresh the quiz page. This is very important, because on most of the audio questions, your students need to hear the beginning of the song in order to answer the question correctly.
Unfortunately, Spotify does not provide full tracks when you use their embed player with iPads or Safari. For this reason, your students will need to use a LAPTOP or DESKTOP with either a FIREFOX, CHROME, or EDGE browser to hear the full songs. If this is not possible, they will have to use the Alternate Spotify Link above each audio player. This will open a new tab in the browser, and they will have to toggle back and forth between the Spotify and Quiz tabs to listen and answer the questions.
( This audio information will be included in the instructions section of each Canvas quiz. For Moodle, you must copy and paste these instructions when you build each quiz from the Moodle question bank. See bottom of this page for additional Moodle details. )
These quizzes are optimized for desktop, laptop, and horizontal tablet viewing. PHONE SCREENS WILL BE TOO SMALL for most questions.
As mentioned, quizzes are available in file formats compatible with either Canvas or Moodle. See the sections below for download buttons and more information on each format.
CANVAS
If you are using Canvas, you can import/export each quiz as its own “package.” The questions will remain in the correct order and each question will retain its individual point value. The Canvas files will be separated into two groups – one for the main quizzes, and one for the optional ear training “mini-quizzes.”
Canvas files are imported / exported as compressed ZIP files. To start, click the buttons from the lists below and follow the procedure you normally use to download and save files to your device. However, DO NOT OPEN THE FILES AT THIS POINT – they should remain zipped until they are imported into Canvas.
NOTE to SAFARI USERS – Safari automatically unzips downloaded files on laptops and desktops (iPads are OK – the files remain zipped). To prevent this, go to the top menu, click on the word “Safari” / “Preferences” / “General” tab / and uncheck the box “Open Safe Files After Downloading” at the bottom of that window. (Nothing needs to change for Firefox, Chrome, or Edge users – these browsers allow files to remain zipped by default.)
To import the quiz ZIP files into Canvas, follow these steps –
1. Log in to your Canvas account, go to main menu / Settings / Import Course Content
2. Under content type, select “QTI .zip file” from the dropdown menu
3. Click “Browse,” go to your computer and select the quiz you just downloaded.
4. Click “Import.” After a few seconds, the quiz should appear in your Canvas quiz folder.
MOODLE
Moodle quiz questions are best imported and exported as XML files. Unfortunately, XML files can be problematic when trying to download from a website link (XML is not supported by WordPress, most download manager plugins, and most file sharing programs like Google Drive). File conversions can also be complicated, so as a simpler alternative, the Moodle quiz questions for Spinning Gold, Volume One will be sent to instructors by email. To request email delivery of these files, please use the following form and allow 1 to 2 days for processing your order.
When you receive the email, download the attached Moodle files to your computer. In contrast to Canvas, Moodle will not import/export an individual quiz completely intact. Instead, quiz questions must be imported / exported through a question bank, then regrouped and placed into newly-created “Quiz Activities.” To import the questions into your course via the Moodle Question Bank, follow these steps –
You will now need to create the chapter quizzes for your course (see Moodle Docs for details on adding a “Quiz Activity”), starting with “spin gold – QUIZ 1.” However, after you transfer the questions for this category into your newly created quiz, the questions will not retain the correct order of the original quiz, thanks to Moodle’s default sorting method (for details, see footnote below). In addition, the individual point values for each question will also not be retained. (Moodle assumes that you will use questions from a question bank in several different quizzes or even in random orders.) This means the instructor will have to manually put the questions in sequential order and assign correct point values before publishing the quiz. As a small assist for this process, the sequential order and point value for each question has been included in the question’s title.
When you create a new Moodle quiz, the first thing you will do is give it a name in the box provided under “Adding a New Quiz” / “General”). Then in the next “Description” box, copy and paste the following text containing general instructions for taking the quiz:

ALSO NOTE – This quiz is optimized for desktop, laptop, and horizontal tablet viewing. PHONE SCREENS WILL BE TOO SMALL for most questions.
For the optional Ear Training mini-quizzes, copy and paste the following text in the “Description” box:
MOODLE EAR TRAINING QUIZ INSTRUCTIONS
— Listen to the chord progressions for each question and write in the chord names as you hear them, answering with letter-name chord symbols (NOT roman numerals).
— Use the symbols ” # ” or ” b ” when necessary – NOT the words “sharp” or “flat.”
— These questions are in the same format as the Chapter 10 ear training exercises, with the key note played four times before each chord progression starts.
— This quiz is optimized for desktop, laptop, and horizontal tablet viewing. PHONE SCREENS WILL BE TOO SMALL for most questions.
[ FOOTNOTE – Moodle automatically sorts questions in a question bank by question type, not alphabetically or numerically by question name, and there is no easy way to change this. The Ear Training quizzes will be ok because all E.T. questions are of the same type. However, the Main Quizzes have more than one type of question, so they must be re-sorted.]
