CHAPTER 14

Ear Training Exercises

These exercises are in the same format as the ear training in Volume One. Each audio example will start with the key note played four times (once per beat).  This will orient your ears to “home base” before the chords begin.  Usually chords will last for four beats, struck once as a whole note.  Occasionally a chord will last for 2, 6, or 8 beats.  Remember to keep the key note firmly in your head (or hum it out loud) while listening to each exercise.
Type in the chords immediately as you hear them using either roman numerals or letter names.  If you have time, quickly check to see if your response is correct before the next chord sounds. You can learn more from your mistakes if you check while the chord is still fresh in your head.  If this is not possible, you can wait until all chords are answered and then go back and check answers after the audio finishes.  You may even want to go back and listen a second or third time before checking your answers.

To try the exercise again, click the “Reset Answers” button.  However, it is not a good idea to repeat the exercise too many times in a row, because you don’t want to accidentally memorize the answers.

NOTE –  If you are using an iPad or other tablet, you will need to shrink and reposition the on-screen keyboard display.  On iPad, use two fingers to pinch the keyboard inward.  This will create a smaller floating keyboard that can be moved to the bottom-right corner of the page. (Use the small grab bar at the bottom to drag the floating keyboard).
